Taught by Anna Nikonenko.  Click here for Anna's profile.

The goal of this course is to provide a comprehensive understanding of China and its people.  We will look at the historical, cultural, socio-economic, religious, philosophical, and political factors that shape and mold China’s past, present, and future.  China has a rich and colorful culture which is resplendent with customs and traditions, music, the arts, ethnic diversity, trade, mythology and folklore, healing and martial arts, food, and festivals.  Our journey will begin with the very formation of this fabulous nation nearly 5000 years ago, and take us through the millennia of war and peace, prosperity and decimation, dynasties and foreign occupation, over mountains, deserts, rain forests, and plains, through the literature, opera, calligraphy, tai chi, herbal remedies, Buddhism, Daoism, Confucianism, right up into the 21st century and beyond.  Come to understand the thinking and way of life of the Chinese people in a close-up account and examination that traces cultural phenomena to their very origins.  This course focuses on the splendor and diversity of China in all its glory from ancient times to the present day.  Come and celebrate this vibrant culture with us, as we explore the highlights of its language, literature, music, drawing and painting, calligraphy, the Chinese zodiac, legends and fables, the amazing minority peoples, festivals and rituals, foods, teas, medicine, pastimes and recreations, and the goals and aspirations of China’s tomorrow.
