This course focuses on the skills
and talents required to achieve creative fashion from concept to
production. We will cover every facet of fashion design for people
interested in working in the industry or starting their own design
company. You will become thoroughly versed in the four seasons of
fashion, collaborating with buyers, forecasters, etc., and the complete
design process from sketching ideas by hand or on computer, to
developing a pattern, cutting and sewing a sample garment, and
coordinating and overseeing the production process. At the end of the 10
weeks, you will possess
-
an eye for color, texture, and
pattern
-
an understanding of essential drawing skills
-
an understanding of the properties
of different fabrics
-
the practical skills for producing
clothes, creating designs, and making up sample garments
-
pattern-cutting and sewing skills
-
the basic ability to communicate
ideas through sketches or computer-generated images
-
an understanding of budgeting and
costing out work
-
an understanding of how to market
your own work, negotiate with clients and buyers, and organize the
administrative and financial side of the business
Each student will work through the
process of sketching, selecting fabrics, draping design concepts, and
fitting models in both muslin and fabric. Come and be a part of the
