Fiction Writing
Intensive workshop (suitable for beginner to advanced students)
Taught by Sawako Nakayasu.  Click here for Sawako's profile.

This class is aimed at helping you to write from your unfettered imagination, and then to cultivate the skills for shaping and molding your work into a short fictional piece, whether a short story, poem, or the beginnings of a novel or screenplay.  There will be many in-class and take-home exercises to get you going, in which all facets of your own imagination, memory, and perception will be engaged.  We will examine and analyze excerpts from some of the world's most compelling fiction pieces, and then compare and contrast these with our own drafts in order to provide support and constructive feedback in a workshop setting.  We will also practice reading from the all-important writerly perspective, while discussing many of the basic elements of fiction, including theme, setting, tone, characterization, point-of-view, and narrative structure.
