Intensive Introduction to Opera
Intensive Introduction (suitable for beginner to advanced students)
Taught by Marla Volovna.  Click here for Marla's profile.

Join us as we venture into the world of opera in all of its glory, exploring every aspect of this amazing art form, from musical composition, singing, acting, and directing, to proper opera critique.  This is a hands-on workshop involving student participation (on a voluntary basis) in such activities as scripting, directing, and dramatization.

This course will take us on a fascinating journey through the magic of the music, the storytelling, and the dramatization, to the symbolic nature of operatic narrative and theme.  On the more technical side, we will focus on scene-work and the principles of staging, sets, costumes, and lighting.

Students will develop the listening faculty while gaining a through knowledge of opera's rich history, from its origins through the most-important periods (Renaissance, Baroque, Classical Romantic, late Romantic and Modern).  We will also view excerpts from major works on DVD for discussion and analyses that are both entertaining and informative.  Everyone will come away from this course with a deep insight into the creation and production of opera as well as an excellent knowledge of the art form overall.
